When it comes to a romantic trip, we immediately imagine the Eiffel Tower, the gondolas of Venice or an island (almost lonely) with a golden beach, palm trees and fine sand. In fact, there are many places that can become the perfect destination for a romantic trip with your partner. All you have to do is look at the map beyond what has become a romantic city. And turn your gaze to Croatia. So, see our ideas on how to spend wonderful days filled with romance and fun.
Where to go?
Go to what is known as the Upper Town of Zagreb – the oldest part of the city, to immerse yourself in the fabulous atmosphere of small stone streets nestled between two hills – Kaptol and Hradec. Instead of lamps, the street lighting is provided by lanterns with an authentic look.
Due to its location, this part of the city provides beautiful panoramic views of the center of Zagreb.
Here you will find a variety of small cafes and restaurants where you can relax, eat or just have a cup of cappuccino and talk to your loved one.
You can reach the upper town from Jelačić Square by heading to Radićeva Street in the direction of the city’s iconic Stone Gate.
The stone gate is the only preserved gate from the medieval fortifications. It is curious that there is a separate iconostasis in the gate and believers often come here to pray and light a candle.
From the Lower to the Upper Town you can reach by cable car . This is the fastest ride in the world and is the oldest and first vehicle in Zagreb. Boarding with it will cost you 4 Croatian kuna or about a lev. For children up to 7 years it is free, if you have a tourist Zagreb Card you also do not need to pay. It runs every 10 minutes from 6.30 am to 10 pm.
If you and your partner share a common passion for art, nature or history, you can visit one of the museums in Upper Zagreb. These include the Zagreb City Museum, the Croatian Museum of Natural History, the Croatian Museum of Naivism and several galleries.
Immerse yourself in romance
Breathtaking fountains, illuminated in different colors , will add extra lyricism to the evening with your partner in Zagreb. During the weekend – from Friday to Sunday, there is a music program. The fountains begin to ” sing ” for 15 minutes three times each weekend evening, at 21.00, 22.00 and 23.00, respectively.
You will find the water extravaganza at the University Park in Zagreb, close to the modern building of the National University Library and the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall. In case you have rented a car or bus, you can park next to both buildings. They are located in the second zone. Be sure to find out about parking and payment areas .
What to see?
See the church “St. Mark ” and the guard change ceremony. The ceremony takes place from the end of April to the end of October at noon on weekends. The church itself has become an emblem of the Croatian capital. You will recognize it by its colorful roof, on which the country’s flag is depicted with colorful tiles.
Keep in mind that in order to see the church from the inside, you will have to wait for the moment when there is a liturgy, because only then the church is open. The liturgies are as follows:
- From Monday to Friday – at 18.00
- Saturday – 7:30 p.m.
- Sunday – 10:30 and at 18:00
Take a walk around the church at sunset or in the evening when the building is lit and the city is quiet. At Christmas the square of the same name near the church “St. Mark ”lights up, illuminated by Christmas trees, which bring additional charm.
What to experience?
Rent bikes and drive along the Sava River or Lake Jarun , also called the Sea of Zagreb. The lake offers cycling trails, water sports opportunities, sports fields for team sports. Here you will enjoy a relaxing and inspiring view and a wonderful park.
If you stick to the option of cycling, it is good to know that different companies offer bicycles for rent at different prices. You have the option of renting per day or per hour. We checked the prices in two random companies. One offers a bicycle at a price of 3 euros per hour, and the other – for 10 euros per day or 7 euros for 4 hours.
You can also cycle to the bike paths of Bundek Park near the Sava River. You will find it between the Bridge of Freedom and the Bridge of Youth. The park has a small lake, barbecue areas, restaurants and, of course, great walkways. Events are often organized here. The International Flower Fair is held in late May and early June, and a fireworks show in mid-June.
Jump to Samobor
Samobor is located about 25 km from Zagreb and in 2018 found a place in the list of the best destinations for nature lovers. The town has a lot of charm in itself and offers more than excellent opportunities for hiking and cycling. It combines forests, meadows, mountain peaks, streams. We offer bike lovers to review these 7 routes . The possibilities for a mountain walk are also interesting .
Make no mistake
