Sustainable tourism is the principle of traveling with awareness of one’s impact on the environment, while ensuring that the places visited do not suffer as a result. It’s a balance to be maintained: we must amplify the positive aspects of our travels while reducing or eliminating the negative effects.

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has exceeded 400 parts per million, the highest level in 800,000 years. This concentration continues to climb, and with it, temperatures. The scientific consensus is clear: a 1.5°C increase will cause global warming that will prove dangerous for our planet. This was evident in 2024, the first year to have surpassed this significant threshold. Climate stability depends on our ability to curb this rise in temperatures, and time is running out.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS ON NATURE?

The environmental crisis goes hand in hand with the climate crisis. Worldwide, it is estimated that one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. The reasons are numerous: intensification of agriculture and forestry, resource extraction, hunting, invasive species, urban sprawl, pollution, and climate change. However, it is not only remote rainforests or polar bears at the ends of the earth that are disappearing. Habitat loss and the effects on biodiversity are being felt even in France. Between fires, forest blazes, and floods, birds, terrestrial species, and marine life are not escaping unscathed.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO REMEDY THIS?

Practicing sustainable tourism is not about making one big gesture once. It’s a mindset to adopt, an awareness that will have an effect on how we go on vacation, from packing our bags to choosing our means of transport, including selecting hotels and activities to do on site.

WHERE TO BEGIN?

Pack less. Traveling light makes getting around easier, whether on foot, by bike, or using public transport. Plus, you’ll use less fuel or energy, which is a significant advantage if you’re traveling in an electric car.

The three Rs rule is useful for avoiding overloading.

Reduce: only bring items that will be truly useful and can have multiple uses.

Reuse: do not take anything that can only be used once.

Recycle: avoid items that cannot be recycled once they are no longer needed, such as plastic bottles, bags and straws.

Over time, the microplastics produced by the decomposition of these items are ingested by marine life and end up in our stomachs, potentially leading to serious health problems. Instead, consider bringing a reusable water bottle, a thermos for your hot drinks, containers for your food and toiletries, and a shopping bag. These will be useful because they will save you from buying plastic bags while you shop.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE I CAN MAKE?

Choosing the right mode of transport is a good way to reduce your carbon emissions. Transportation alone is responsible for 70% of CO2 emissions during holiday travel. The most effective approach is to reduce the distance traveled and travel in a way that consumes less, or even better, no fossil fuels at all, and to use environmentally friendly modes of transport. Another solution is to forgo a vehicle altogether and travel on foot, by bicycle, or by sailboat.

There is a significant difference between the CO2 emitted by airplanes and that of most land vehicles. Concerted efforts are underway to decarbonize air travel, using different fuels and propulsion methods, such as electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles. However, even the most optimistic predictions state that this transition will take at least ten years for most airlines. Currently, a single long-haul flight can emit more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than a person driving a gasoline-powered car will in a year. In France, choosing the train over the plane results in 30 to 50 times less CO2 emissions , when considering energy consumption, vehicle manufacturing, and maintenance.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE TO TAKE A PLANE?

If you’re travelling by plane, keep in mind that there’s a significant difference between the carbon emissions of aircraft and those of the procedures carried out by airlines. You can use online tools like Skyscanner or Opodo , which allow you to filter your search to show only flights with the lowest CO2 emissions .

Air travel remains a major source of pollution, so try to adopt a more selective approach when you travel. Just like the flexitarian diet, which prioritizes plant-based foods and encourages a reduction in meat and fish consumption, you can fly occasionally and travel by land the rest of the time. Stay longer in destinations accessible by air, and choose places that respect the environment and the well-being of local communities.

WHAT IS MY CARBON FOOTPRINT ONCE I ARRIVE?

Once you arrive at your destination, other factors will influence your carbon emissions, such as your choice of hotel and the food you eat. In France, a hotel night emits approximately 10 kg of CO2 per person, according to a March 2020 publication by the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME). Therefore, choosing a hotel that emits less carbon than average can make a difference to your trip’s carbon footprint. Fortunately, it’s becoming increasingly easy to find hotels that meet these criteria. Many online booking sites now have an option allowing you to filter results, such as Airbnb , Sawday , and i-escape . Some online agencies even specialize in this, for example, fairbnb.coop and GreenGo . Booking.com , TripAdvisor , and Google highlight eco-certified hotels in their search results. These accommodations sometimes do more than simply reduce their carbon emissions; they also make efforts to reduce the amount of waste produced, the use of chemicals, and the amount of water used.

Enjoying local dishes and seasonal produce is also a good, environmentally friendly habit, avoiding food transportation (known as “food miles”). Whether it’s fresh bread for breakfast, a salad bought at the local market for lunch, or the catch of the day at a seafood restaurant, consuming local products isn’t just good for the planet. It’s also a healthier option and a great way to support the local economy.

WHICH DESTINATIONS TO CHOOSE?

Some of Europe’s most vibrant cities are perfect choices for a green getaway, such as Bristol, Angers, Nantes, Zurich, Ljubljana, and Copenhagen. Local authorities, taking a pragmatic approach, have implemented a circular economy to create sustainable transportation, housing, and economic policies that accelerate their transition to net zero carbon. This makes the experience all the more enjoyable for those who love sustainable tourism. For example, connected green spaces contribute to stormwater management, as well as improving air quality and biodiversity. These initiatives also have the added benefit of creating more green sanctuaries within cities, allowing people to appreciate urban nature or simply relax in parks and gardens.

Traveling to Italy is an unforgettable experience, but understanding Italian laws and cultural etiquette is essential to avoid complications. Restrictions in Italy affect many aspects of daily life, from traffic rules to behavior in public places. Understanding Italian culture and respecting Italian laws will allow you to fully enjoy your stay without any unpleasant surprises.

Traveling to Italy requires careful preparation. Whether you’re driving through the historic streets of Rome or visiting the churches of Florence, each region has its own specific regulations. Limited traffic zones, dress codes at religious sites, and road safety rules are key elements to be aware of.

This guide sheds light on the main mistakes to avoid during your trip. A general overview of important local laws and cultural etiquette in Italy will help you quickly adapt to the country’s norms and enjoy a truly authentic and stress-free experience.

Understanding important local laws in Italy

Understanding Italian traffic laws is essential before embarking on a road trip in this beautiful country. Traffic restrictions in Italy can catch unprepared travelers off guard, and ignoring these rules can turn your trip into an administrative and financial nightmare.

Road traffic rules you should know

Driving in Italy follows the right-hand traffic pattern, as in most European countries. This basic rule is accompanied by numerous local customs that are illegal in Italy if you do not respect them.

Speed limits vary depending on the type of road:

Motorways (autostrade) : 130 km/h (110 km/h in wet weather)

Main roads outside built-up areas : 90 km/h

Secondary roads : 70 km/h

Urban areas : 50 km/h

Speeding fines are particularly steep in Italy. Even a minor speeding violation can cost you several hundred euros, not including processing fees for foreign drivers.

Limited traffic zones (ZTLs) deserve special attention. These areas protect the historic centers of major Italian cities like Rome, Florence, Bologna, and Milan. Automatic cameras monitor entry and exit 24/7. Entering a ZTL without authorization is a serious offense, punishable by a minimum fine of 80 euros. Some tourists receive multiple tickets in a single day without even realizing it, as each time they pass a camera, a new fine is issued.

Travel requirements for Italy also require checking the activation times of ZTLs (Limited Traffic Zones). Some zones remain accessible in the evenings or on weekends, while others have permanent travel restrictions for Italy . Your hotel can often provide a temporary pass if you are staying within a ZTL, but you must provide your license plate number in advance.

Restrictions in Italy also include a ban on parking in areas marked with yellow lines, which are reserved for residents or emergency services.

Road safety and driving behavior

Italian laws impose strict rules to guarantee the safety of all road users. Understanding these restrictions in Italy is an essential part of traveling there and should not be overlooked.

Vehicle lighting is mandatory

All vehicles must drive with their headlights on on highways and rural roads, even during the day. This requirement, often overlooked by tourists, constitutes a serious offense. Knowing what is illegal in Italy can save you from hefty fines.

Navigating roundabouts

Priority always belongs to vehicles already in the roundabout. Respecting this simple rule prevents accidents and penalties.

Practical advice

Always keep your driving documents within easy reach

Avoid using your phone while driving without a hands-free kit.

Strictly obey local traffic signs

Park only in designated areas to avoid vehicle towing

These travel restrictions for Italy apply to all drivers without exception.

Italian cultural etiquette and traditions to be respected

Italian culture is based on deep-rooted values of respect, elegance, and conviviality. Understanding Italian traditions helps avoid misunderstandings and enriches your travel experience. Italians place great importance on appearances and good manners, especially in public and religious settings.

Dress codes and behavior in religious places

Italian churches, basilicas, and sacred sites have strict dress codes. Before entering these spaces, please ensure you comply with these requirements:

Shoulders must be covered : tank tops, sleeveless tops, and low-cut clothing are prohibited.

Knees must be covered : shorts, short skirts, and dresses above the knee are not permitted.

Appropriate footwear : avoid flip-flops and opt for closed shoes.

Hats removed : Men must remove their head coverings indoors

St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican strictly enforces these rules. Guards refuse entry to inappropriately dressed visitors, without exception. Pack a scarf or shawl in your bag to cover your shoulders if necessary.

Your behavior inside places of worship reflects your understanding of Italian culture. Speak quietly, turn off your phone, and refrain from eating or drinking. Flash photography is generally prohibited, as it damages ancient frescoes. Some chapels prohibit photography altogether.

Precautions for tourists: safety and general laws

Traveling in Italy requires a clear understanding of the restrictions and travel requirements .
Tickets for museums, monuments, and transportation should always be purchased from official sources.
Public demonstrations are a part of Italian social life. While generally peaceful, they can cause disruptions to transportation and access to certain neighborhoods. Check local news and plan your travels accordingly. A general understanding of important local laws and cultural etiquette in Italy will help you avoid difficult situations.

Sports and tourist activities: essential safety guidelines

Beautiful architecture, art, narrow streets, delicious food, a bottle of wine and you both. Sounds romantic, right? Europe offers a huge selection of destinations that evoke thoughts of love. Although it was difficult for us to choose, we gathered 10 of them here.

Budapest

Budapest offers fabulous views, especially when it gets dark and the city is bathed in lights

We cannot hide that we are very biased towards the Hungarian capital. Beautiful bridges twist over the blue waters of the Danube. The Royal Palace and the Fishermen’s Bastion, on the other hand, are incredibly illuminated in the evening and offer magnificent panoramic views of the city. Of course, we can not miss the proud parliament, which attracts tourists like a magnet.

Whether you watch the lights of the city at night, huddled with your loved one in one of the towers of the Bastion, or walk along the river hand in hand, Budapest will surely charge you with a gentle mood.

And since we mentioned wine in the beginning – Hungarians make great wines. And at very normal prices you can buy a bottle of really good wine. Combine it with typical Hungarian sausages and several types of cheese. Wine, travel and love! What more does a person need? Maybe melt in warm mineral water? That’s right, you probably know that Budapest is famous for its baths. They are a kind of spa with pools of mineral water of different temperatures. There are usually both indoor and outdoor pools.

Dublin

The greenery and charming streets of Dublin will provide you with the necessary dose of romance

Dublin is sure to appeal to couples who love to share experiences in nature. The city offers tranquility and a variety of walking routes among oases of greenery.
Rich history, delicious food and lots of water in which the sun reflects… Whether you prefer the temperament of the sea or the lyrics of the river – in Dublin there are both.

Well, doesn’t Dublin sound like a great place to take a lot of photos?

In the evening, tired of long walks, you will sit alone in a typical Irish pub, order a glass of amber Irish whiskey, laugh at the fun events of the day and enjoy your love.

Venice

A huge number of marriage proposals have taken place through the canals of Venice

Coincidentally or not, we continue with another city with plenty of water. Apparently there is some mysterious connection between love and water. You will surely agree that a lot of romance lies in riding a gondola at sunset on one of Venice’s many canals.

Besides, all of Italy is love. Italians love life, they love food, they love wine and strong black coffee. Italians love to love each other and you can’t help but get caught up in all this love.

Ljubljana

Ljubljana can also offer you romance in large doses

If you have not been to the Slovenian capital, you may be a little skeptical about our proposal. In fact, the moment you walk around the city with your partner, you will understand that we have the right to put Ljubljana on this list. We will mention only a few key words: castle, river, beautiful bridges and boats… And let’s not forget – poetry! In the central square of the city is immortalized one of the most famous European poets of Romanticism – Franz Prechern. He is known for his sonnets and it is no coincidence that he is compared to Shakespeare.

Ljubljana is also known for its green heart. We are not joking at all. The city was declared the Green European Capital in 2016, due to the sustainable line of development that follows the many green areas.

Santorini

Enjoy the sea and the sun in Santorini

More romance and breath of the sea! We can’t miss the sunny Greek island when we talk about love.

The white and blue colors of the buildings typical of the island liberate the mind and immerse it in a sea of love. Unlike the novels, however, the island is not alone. Quite lively even. Therefore, if you are looking for more privacy, visit it outside the tourist season. Most tourists are between June and mid-September, the rest of the time you can enjoy more peace.

On Santorini you will find beautiful beaches, clear water, beautiful streets, terraced houses, rocks, delicious food and last but not least – restaurants with authentic Greek music.

Madeira

Add the ocean to this charm and you will be convinced that Madeira will win your heart

While we are on the island wave – Madeira is not to be missed! The island offers breathtaking views of the boundless blue of the Atlantic Ocean. It is located near the African continent, but is the territory of Portugal. The beauty of the island is complemented by majestic rocks and lots of greenery.

In this paradise of Portugal, you can relax on the beach or be active and explore the local hiking trails.

The volcanic soil of the island produces juicy and sweet grapes, from which master wine is produced here. You should definitely try it.

“Perched” on the hills of houses give additional charm to the lovely Madeira. If we have inspired you to go – don’t forget to send us a photo!

Prague captivates with its charm anyone who chooses to walk through its cobbled streets. The pointed roofs, which are rapidly aimed at the sky, are a typical part of the paintings that the city paints.

Once you visit Prague, you will not be surprised why so many couples have decided to “lock” their love on the posts of the Vltava River.

The Czech capital invites you to shoot it again and again, day and night, summer and winter.

The pre-Christmas atmosphere in the city is magical and almost fabulous. Christmas bazaars attract with the aroma of mulled wine, pastries and Czech sausages. If you travel to Prague in the summer, the heat will be a convenient excuse to taste the different types of beer that the Czechs brew.

Salzburg

Salzburg is becoming a city of fairy tales in winter

In Salzburg you can treat yourself to a classic romance by riding a carriage. A more unusual but equally emotional experience is to get on Austria’s oldest working funicular. Why not “lock” your love with a padlock on the bridge over the Salz River?

Enjoy the charm of the palaces and the coziness of the authentic breweries. The city offers opportunities for hiking and leisurely city walks.

Paris

The Eiffel Tower is a well-known symbol of Paris, but the Louvre also looks very beautiful in the evening

No, we have not forgotten the French capital. Paris is synonymous with the city of love. Somehow we naturally think of it when it comes to romantic destinations. Precisely because we know you will not miss it, we were in no hurry to remind you of it.

Anyway…. Paris is really worth it!

The elegance and charm of the French streets, the French language and the music of the country will surely captivate your senses and hearts. In addition, your palate will fall in love with the cuisine of the country!

The Eiffel Tower is probably one of the landmarks in Europe, which has silently witnessed the most marriage proposals. And this is not without reason. The tower is truly a wonderful place to propose or accept a marriage proposal.

If you and your partner have found another place full of romance, let us know ?

If you decide to visit Los Angeles, try to spend at least one day at one of the city’s theme parks. There is no shortage of choice: you can experience a magical day at Disneyland or take a trip to Universal Studios if you prefer monsters to princesses. Don’t miss out on discovering the main attractions of these parks: “Muppets Vision 3D” (Disneyland) or the “House of Horrors” (Universal Studios).

2. Forget special effects, see real monsters

This is a fun thing to do in Los Angeles that you’ve probably never heard of! The Brea Tar Pits is in fact a tar pit that has become, over thousands of years, a deposit of animal fossils that found themselves trapped inside. There we find mainly insects, but also mammoths, sloths, bears…

Every day, scientists dig up fossils of now extinct prehistoric animals from tar pits, such as fossils of mastodons (a type of prehistoric elephant), smilodons (saber-toothed tigers) and giant sloths. The museum houses over a million fossils, all of which were found in the nearby tar pits. These wells continue to emit gas bubbles. You can see them for yourself while strolling through the park’s gardens. Clearly, it’s a great, unusual visit to make in Los Angeles to educate yourself and surprise yourself.

3. Attend a film festival in Los Angeles

It would be a shame to visit Los Angeles, the cinema capital of the world, without watching a film or two. If you love Hollywood glamour, try planning your trip to come to LA during the TCM Classic Film Festival . You can see films of all genres: detective films, westerns, dramatic comedies… The films are shown in the Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the Egyptian Theater – a cinema that looks like an Egyptian temple! Even outside of the festival, don’t miss visiting these two multiplexes, if only for their incredible architecture and their friendly atmosphere.

4. Go to the beach in Los Angeles

Despite the immensity of the city, Los Angeles is home to magnificent sandy beaches and the city is very sunny: it receives 3,200 hours of sunshine each year – or 500 hours of sunshine more than in Nice! Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit.

In Santa Monica, the seaside promenade stretches for many kilometers. You don’t know what to do in Los Angeles and you’re in good shape? Don’t hesitate to rent a bike or a pair of rollerblades and take a trip to Venice Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the city.

5. Explore wildlife at the Los Angeles Zoo

The Americans know how to do it when it comes to zoos. The Los Angeles Zoo is no exception: it is home to 1,100 amazing animals such as elephants, gorillas, tigers and Komodo dragons, which live in magnificent enclosures. The zoo is located within Griffith Park, a beautiful park that is also worth a visit. Pack a few sandwiches and spend the day exploring the place! It’s a must-visit place in Los Angeles. If you wish, you can tour the city of Vegas by traveling by Greyhound bus.

I am a person who has always believed in the power of words, but when you face such magic of nature, you realize how insignificant [...]

I am a person who has always believed in the power of words, but when you face such magic of nature, you realize how insignificant all words are. Nature speaks another language that you hear, see and feel with all your senses when you are in front of it. I didn’t believe Navagio Beach would captivate me like that and keep me speechless, smiling, and sighing in amazement. The view from the cliffs above is truly insanely beautiful, and I could stay there for a long time, staring at the sheer cliffs, the azure water, the white sand, the oncoming ships and yachts, and the whole surrounding sea.

September turned out to be a great time to relax on the island of Zakynthos, home to the famous Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach. The name comes from the remains of a pirate ship, which is damaged and remains on the beach. We went up the cliffs before noon and there were almost no other tourists, we walked around to get to the place with the best view of Navagio and sat there for a while without being disturbed by anyone.
The beach below can only be reached by water and we did not intend to walk because we chose to visit other beaches by boat. So we did, but by chance we ended up on Navagio the next day due to lack of a group only for the Blue Rocks (another landmark of Zakynthos). I do not regret at all that we saw the beach from below, because it made my experience complete – to contemplate a picture from afar and then get closer to explore it in detail, necessarily in this order, is even more impressive. We caught the boat from Skinari, it left us for 1 hour on Navagio and then we had stops on the Blue Rocks.
Navagio’s pebbles are whitish and round, and the sand is coarse. The water is incredibly colorful, turquoise, clean and while you are inside, you see the bottom perfectly, around you are the majestic sheer cliffs and the exotic is complete! There was a large influx of people, which is quite understandable for such a beautiful tourist place. Zakynthos has many more great beaches with white sand and bright blue water, where you can feel more secluded, so Navagio is more of a landmark for me than a beach where I would spend all day.
Navagio is now only in my memories and gives birth to a sincere happy smile at the thought of him. I wish everyone to see it!

It is always a challenge to travel alone, but especially if you are a woman, you should choose your destination even more carefully. It is still not recommended to travel alone in many parts of the world, and in others you have to follow the local culture, especially in dress, such as in the conservative societies of many countries in the Middle East and Africa. In many South American countries, crime rates are a major brake on solo travelers, and travel becomes even more risky if taken by women. But on the other pole, fortunately, there are many other destinations that are a real paradise for free travelers and offer a completely safe and comfortable environment for touring and exploring the local natural, cultural and all sorts of other attractions. And so,

1. New Zealand

They recommend New Zealand even as the most suitable for a first experience in solo travel. Safe and calm, it is an excellent choice for all lovers of natural attractions. With its amazing landscapes, volcanoes, beaches, small villages and many opportunities for various activities, it is one of the countries – a model for eco-tourism.

2. Denmark

Denmark is one of the friendliest and most free destinations where solo travelers from all over the world can feel completely comfortable and safe. Denmark tops the Annual Happiness Index, and Copenhagen is one of the cleanest capitals in Europe and the world. Travelers around the country have a wide choice between cultural, historical and natural attractions, varied cuisine and exciting places for shopping and modern entertainment.

3. Iceland

With one of the lowest crime rates and a well-organized tourism infrastructure, Iceland is one of the most easily accessible solo travel destinations in the world. Women travelers often choose it to start their hobby and because of the friendly local people, for whom it would be absurd to cheat you in the taxi bill or in a bar. “Land of Fire and Ice”, as Iceland is called, has contrasting natural landmarks – active volcanoes and some of the largest glaciers in Europe, which can be explored through exciting and varied tours of several hours, departing from the capital Reykjavik.

4. The island of Bali in Indonesia

Unlike other places in Indonesia, the island of Bali is a safe and preferred place for women travelers for vacations and excursions. With its unique Buddhist temples, stunning beaches and well-meaning locals, Bali is rightly called the “Land of the Gods”.

5. Australia

Full of hostels, cafes and restaurants for free travelers, Australia is a truly settled, yet extremely curious and diverse destination. It is world famous for surfers, wine lovers, lovers of wild and unique Australian flora and fauna, campers and dozens of other diverse interests, but in this case it is in the top 8 of the most recommended and safest places. for wandering by women.

6. Switzerland

Needless to say, Switzerland has developed and settled, and it is certainly one of the most preferred and safe places for women traveling alone. The variety offered by this destination varies widely between practicing winter sports or summer hiking in the Swiss Alps and visiting museums and galleries in the cities, necessarily combined with time for the cozy cafes and shopping centers of Geneva, Zurich, Basel…

7. Dubai (UAE)

Although it is a representative of another culture and religion, characterized by conservative notions of the place of women, the emirate is an extremely safe tourist destination for traveling women. Dubai’s high level of security is due to draconian measures by local police and laws, where crime is generally kept to a minimum. Solo travelers can rest assured of their safety, and it’s a matter of personal choice to what extent they will follow local dress codes in public places.

8. Canada

Canada is recommended as one of the calmest and most solo-friendly countries in the world. Those looking for cultural attractions and events will find them in diversity in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, and wildlife lovers will feel perfect among a huge number of national parks, providing inexhaustible opportunities for hiking, rafting, skiing, whale watching, polar bears and other outdoor activities. The developed tourist infrastructure and the level of security make Canada one of the favorite destinations of women travelers from all over the world.

Verso Corniglia

Cosa mettere nello zaino

Ossia:

Kit di primo soccorso

Acqua in abbondaza

Snack e spuntini energetici ( frutta, frutta secca, noci, barrette…)

Cappello

Crema solare
